The New York Times Travel Secrets and Starbucks is hiring Creators to Travel
Have you ever thought you could do this because you're already doing that?
Things that you never thought you could do are what companies are hiring for such as travel the world and make silly little videos, take your silly photos, and write your silly little captions such as dropping gems and wish you were here. Sounds like you could do it. Do you wake up in the morning wanting to see what new coffee shop opened up in your neighborhood but hate Starbucks? Maybe you shouldn’t apply for the Starbucks gig but you gotta give it to Starbucks for finally coming out with the first good idea after hiring their new CEO and firing him then hiring a new CEO then keeping him. For now.
All the coffee and matcha TikTokers I follow, I would think they would have what it takes to travel around the world and make posts about what they’re drinking but I have to say, I don’t follow what they’re saying. It’s their editing game that gets me. The chop and slop of their content. The knowledge these content creators are dropping is wrong half the time and what they are drinking are basic brands that you may have seen at your local grocery store. Unless it’s a shoppy shop then congrats, you’ve made it to the next level of grocery.
TikTokers and Reelers (chat what are we calling Instagrammers who make Reels?) are the ones who fuel the standing in line for 2 hours crisis that you see at every pastry, bagel, and matcha shop. We can’t forget that Google Reviews and Reddit play a part in committing to blowing up your favorite local spots for tourists. I am grateful for these corners of tech but I mostly travel the world via word of mouth and wherever friends of friends tell me waht I should check out.
My friend yesterday at Baby Blues Luncheonette in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn while ordering the Zorba Plate and sharing a plate of Babycakes asked why I travel so much? There was still a line at the restaurant capped through the afternoon, people coming in from wherever they’re based in the world, and while the hostess knows me from meeting her there, we were able to skip the line and get hit with that friend and fam discount. I told him that when I travel the world I still get this warm treatment everywhere I go. It’s one of my favorite feelings to have. I’m no celebrity. I love getting free shit but I love supporting my favorite establishments and enjoy traveling the world, spending my money at food spots and having conversations I would never have at home. Recently a Real Housewife went to an establishment and thought she didn’t have to pay her bill. First off, who are you? Second, $1,000 comp when no one told you before hand is idiocracy.
I woke up this morning to The New York Times: The Morning in my inbox entitled Travel Secrets. Ever since coming back from this years edition of Wear Many Hats World Tour: Bali, Kuala Lumpur, and Kyoto, all I could think of is Wear Many Hats a travel blog now? The meetings I’ve been taking all week, have been organically telling folks that Wear Many Hats is a travel blog of some sort mixed with wanting to be the next Morning Brew. We put our foot down. Although our dreams of making Wear Many Hats our passion project, it’s time to get the gears going and get funding in place so we can keep continuing to travel the world and share with you our dropping gems, wish you were here. This American Life meets High Maintenance concept will still be in place for where this makes sense in NYC but worldwide, it’s time to make content that Starbucks would pay without being employed to Starbucks.
In the Travel Secrets newsletter by The New York Times, Lyna Bentahar is a travel writer that shares her experiences of traveling alone in Kyoto and shares the city’s hidden gems. The way she shares the sights she sees is the same way people share their Japan tips on the Facebook Group I stumbled upon on Reddit called Tokyo Travel Tips. When people share their experiences or hauls from Japan, the west is enthusiastic with joy or sadness from the unfortunate incidents they encounter. For an example someone shared getting a portable wifi router or hotspot while traveling. I forgot that it’s been a longtime that those were expensive but now they are reasonable to have and travel with. That and a power bank is an essential piece of equipment you must have while you travel. This was so helpful for me. At the same time there are people that blame Japan for certain architecture that causes them to injure themselves, train times that they don’t understand that causes them to be late, and not understanding another country’s culture.
The beauty of traveling is that you shouldn’t go to a place just once. It should make you want to come back again if you love it the first time and if you fail the first go around, don’t give up, and try again next time. Here’s looking at you Vietnam.
