Dying for Sex is the best adaptation from podcast to television
It's how I want writers and producers to adapt our podcast, Wear Many Hats, into a television show but this is not about us
People think I go out a lot. Well you’re right, I’m always out. It’s only because I need to get ideas for Wear Many Hats. Did we stop saying “we outside” yet? One of my favorite things is to stay in and catch up on all my television shows. I’m always interested in what’s hot and what’s out at the moment. My big thing is that I’m down for what friends and guests of the show recommend to me. I like to keep up with what’s going on with current events but what brings me at ease is what’s playing in movies and television when it comes out to the big screen.
You can find out what Dying For Sex is. You can find out that Dying For Sex is a compelling podcast inspired by a true story of Molly Kochan and her best friend Nikki Boyer that is a podcast on Wondery. You can find out that it’s a heartwarming and heartbreaking journey that Molly goes through in grappling with stage four breast cancer. There are many different themes shared in every episode but it makes you think about what you want to do when it’s your time?
When you learn that you’ll no longer be on this earth or have a limited time to live, you might announce it privately to your closest friends. You’ll try to do as much as you can. Drain your retirement accounts and do the thing that you always wanted to do. I think about that often. I’m trying to do everything I can now. I haven’t been close to dying but I have been close to that feeling.
What would you do? Where would you go? Who would you tell? Who is that one person that would be by your side? Would you hit up your exes? You couldn’t go too far but you want to be close to your loved ones.
F*** cancer.
I haven’t rated any Television shows on Letterboxd yet, but this may as well be the time to rate the ultimate highest rating I can for Dying For Sex. It’s a mini series brought to us by FX and on Hulu. It has the most absolute all star cast that I would ever dream of. I never forgot that Michelle Williams is the straight up GOAT but everyone knows my love for Jenny Slate. Jenny Slate is my hall pass. The comedian transition to actor pipeline is my favorite in this particular arts and a path I would go down on. Jenny does it so skillfully, it turns me on. Esco Jouley, theatrical performer that coins herself as a creator movement artist clown, is one of the best new on screen actors as of late. Rob Delaney, Jay Duplass, Sissy Spacek, David Rasche, and Kelvin Yu.. each of their performances are incredible and moving. Should I say more? Even Robby Hoffman appears on an episode where I first thought they were unbearable, but is also crushing it. Incredible writers and performers. Previous comics or current, they’re all funny in their own way and bring it to perfection on screen.
The original score by Ariel Marx moves you just as much as the show does. Ariel Marx is a musical genius that brings a layer to the show it would be nowhere without. The keys match up with each scene and every character that the score brings the good or bad news to Molly Kochan. I can only hold my tears in for so long but after the first few episodes, without a doubt, I’m leaking uncontrollable tears after.
Ever since the start of my podcast, Wear Many Hats, it has been my dream for the show to be adapted from podcast to television. I want the best writers, producers, and of course, cast. I have always said that our show, Wear Many Hats, is an in-between of High Maintenance and This American Life. I have no idea how I’ll get there but I know that when I get to that level, be an executive producer, and have it on a network. I still want to own the IP and the rights if it’s even still possible to do that in the world of selling out.
Will you help me get it there? How many episodes do I have to do to get to that level? We will never know but it’s one of my dreams I hope to achieve before I leave this earth.
